Asbestos products can be found in most school buildings. Although asbestos can be a serious hazard, this is not necessarily cause for concern because of the awareness level of officials involved in the education and care of children. Guidelines AHERA established require certain measures to be taken to maintain a safe environment for children at schools.
In some school buildings all asbestos has been removed. However, in most schools some asbestos containing materials have been removed, but much also has sealed. This containment by sealing must meet federal standards and be regularly inspected.
Each school is required to have an asbestos management plan that can be accessed at the school office. Any person concerned about a potential problem at a school can contact the principal of the school or the superintendent of the school district. Local school boards are also actively concerned about this potential health hazard in their schools.
