If you have any doubts about the contents of a material, you should treat it as if it contains mesothelioma causing asbestos. A professional should take samples for analysis, since a professional knows what to look for and because he is trained and has access to protective clothing if the material needs to be disturbed. Taking samples yourself is never recommended because if done incorrectly, sampling can be more hazardous than leaving the material alone.
