Onconase is a new anti-cancer drug for the treatment of patients with inoperable malignant mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer of the inner lining of the chest and abdomen.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology reported that Onconase was equivalent to the potent chemotherapy drug, doxorubicin in controlling growth of malignant mesothelioma. Also a subset of patients treated with this novel anti-cancer drug had a two-month median survival advantage compared to doxorubicin and 1-year and 2-year survival rates favored Onconase-treated patients.

Currently an international, randomized trial is ongoing in the U.S. and Europe comparing Onconase + doxorubicin to doxorubicin alone. This trial includes patients with both peritoneal and pleural mesothelioma and allows patients to enter the trial even if they have failed one prior chemotherapy regimen and/or radiation treatment.
