Recurrent mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelia that has returned after it has been treated. It might return to the same location as before or in another area. Treatment usually includes procedures and/or medications that were not previously used. Standard treatment has not been able to improve the survival rate or control symptoms for an extended period of time. Patients who have survived the initial occurrence of the disease are candidates for phase I and II clinical trials which test new approaches. Clinical trials offer some hope to patients with recurrent mesothelioma. The procedures and drugs used have not been proven to be safe, effective, or resulting in more harm than benefit. A decision to enter a clinical trial is made case be case and should be made after careful consideration of risks versus possible benefits.
