Localized mesothelioma is cancer that has not spread beyond the site of the initial tumor. It is referred to as Stage I. Treatment is usually surgery to remove the tumor and some of the tissue around it. Pleurectomy/Decortication is usually the operation performed on patients with early stage disease (Stage I and selected Stage II), and attempts to remove the entire tumor. If all of the tumor can not be removed, the lung also might be removed, a pneumonectomy.

Since surgery is unable to remove 100% of the cancerous cells, chemotherapy or radiation therapy is also used after surgery to eliminate as many residual cells as possible.
