Supportive treatment is necessary in patients with malignant mesothelioma to control pain and shortness of breath. For some patients, it may be the only treatment offered — for example, when the tumor is not operable. For others, supportive therapy may be all they seek, rather than undergoing aggressive surgery or suffering the side effects of other treatments.
